Focal Diva Mezza Utopia: French hi-fi between extreme luxury and technological feat

Focal Diva Mezza Utopia : la hi-fi française entre luxe extrême et prouesse technologique

Rarely has a pair of speakers turned so many heads. With the Diva Mezza Utopia, Focal makes a big statement in the hushed (but increasingly restless) world of connected high fidelity. This active, wireless and resolutely high-end model doesn’t just add another link to the Utopia range, the ultimate showcase…

The evolution of the Diva Utopia: louder, wider, more extreme

If you followed the release of the Focal Diva Utopia, know that this Mezza version is not just a cosmetic variation. It goes further on (almost) every front. Bigger (127 x 46 x 62 cm versus 121 x 42 x 56), heavier (90 kg per speaker), more powerful (2 x 500 W in Class AB), this new version features four 20.5 cm woofers, compared with two 16.5 cm ones before. Maximum sound level rises to 120 dB SPL, and the frequency response goes down to 25 Hz for bottomless bass.

Active speakers, but audiophile to the core

The real revolution? It is hidden in the built-in electronics. Focal worked hand in hand with Naim Audio to build in the amplification, the 384 kHz/32-bit DAC, the streaming module (Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, AirPlay 2, Spotify, Tidal and Qobuz Connect…) and even multiroom management. The result: no more stacking separate components, everything is inside the speaker. All you need is a smartphone and a bit of network to control it all.

The signal between the two speakers is sent wirelessly via a UWB (Ultra Wide Band) module, ensuring optimal latency and quality. In a difficult environment, a Hi-Res Ethernet cable (supplied) provides a flawless connection.

Acoustic craftsmanship of the highest order

The heart of the system is still Focal’s sound signature. Each speaker houses a 27 mm pure beryllium tweeter, mounted as an M-profile inverted dome, for extremely precise highs. The midrange is a 16.5 cm driver with a W cone (foam/glass sandwich), TMD suspension and NIC motor, delivering a rare level of detail. And the four 20.5 cm push-pull woofers deliver controlled, ultra-fast, distortion-free power. All of it is kept in sync by IDC (Intelligent Dynamics Clocking) technology.

But where Focal impresses even more is in the cabinet itself. Goodbye wood, hello high-density polymer moulded using RIM technology, usually found in luxury cars. This construction, in just three pieces, eliminates standing waves while keeping a sculptural look.

An experience designed for real life, not the lab

Because real life never looks like an anechoic chamber, Focal has built in the Adapt calibration system. No need for a microphone or complex tools: the dedicated app offers tuning based… on your ears. And once the setup is optimised for your room and your taste, you can adjust the effect from 0 to 100%.

Another neat touch: a dynamic loudness function boosts bass and treble when listening at low volume. Discreet, it fades away as soon as you turn it up, because yes, these speakers can fill an 80 m² room without breaking a sweat.

Connections, format, finishes: pure luxury in every detail

The Diva Mezza Utopia don’t forget to be practical: HDMI eARC for home cinema integration, optical input, RCA, USB‑A, Ethernet, RJ45 Speaker Link… it’s all there. Compatibility with the main codecs (FLAC, WAV, AIFF, ALAC, MP3, DSD up to 5.6 MHz) is guaranteed, and regular software updates promise a long life for these gems.

The design, meanwhile, sits somewhere between sound sculpture and luxury object. The ivory felt finish, the red grilles on the tweeters and the matching remote are all nods to a world where high fidelity merges with the art of living.

A French vision of the future of music

With the Diva Mezza Utopia, Focal isn’t just selling a pair of speakers. It offers a radical vision of what music can (and should) be today: connected, demanding, intuitive, emotional. At a time when sound quality is often sacrificed on the altar of portability, the brand sets the record straight. In a big way. In a majestic way. And with panache.
