#Interview Rodmusic x LUDE

Both a talented guitarist and producer, LUDE cut his teeth in music from a very young age. After several successful singles since launching his project, he kicks off 2019 with “Can You Feel It”, in collaboration with singer Kevin Davy White, a finalist on the 2017 season of X Factor UK. We meet…

How did this passion for music begin?

This passion for music was passed down by my father who, from the cradle, played me every album by Neil Young, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. He enrolled me at the conservatoire at the age of 6 to learn the guitar.

How long have you been making electronic music?

I’ve been making “electronic” music for 5 years. Music I decided to adapt my instrument, the guitar, to.

What has changed since your first single “Walk Of Shame” came out in 2016?

“Walk Of Shame” was my first step into the music industry. Since then, I think I’ve gained maturity in the way I think and compose. Several million streams have been added, along with plenty of radio play. My tour is being prepared.

On stage, in photos and in your videos too, you always appear with your guitar. Has it become LUDE’s trademark?

It always has been, it just needed time to develop and for the public to know me as the guitarist/producer/DJ, LUDE.

Can you tell us about your new track “Can You Feel It”, released on 8 February?

I wrote “Can You Feel It” in four hours. What I used to play and compose as a child comes through in this song.

What do you mean when you say this track is a “return to your roots”?

“Can You Feel It” is a real return to the musical roots I was brought up on: blues/rock/groove. I wanted to fuse those influences with what I enjoy today, pop and dance music.

LUDE: Can You Feel It ft. Kevin Davy White

How did you meet Kevin Davy White?

I met Kevin Davy White 3 years ago at my record label. We were both at the start of our careers. I hadn’t released “Walk Of Shame” yet and Kevin probably never imagined he’d be an X Factor UK finalist. Coming from the same influences, we quickly hit it off and started making music together.

What inspired you when producing this track?

I don’t really have a specific inspiration. I brought together my world, my childhood and the present.

Blues and rock are increasingly being paired with electronic music. Do you think this will be one of the big new trends of 2019?

I think blues and rock have always been paired with every style of music. Electronic music is one of them, and I certainly hope to strengthen the trend.

What are the keys to a successful production?

Everyone has their own method, obviously. A great producer called Quincy Jones, whom I was lucky enough to have for a masterclass at Berklee College Of Music, taught us the “rule of three” in pop: the voice, the riff, the groove. I’ve always followed his advice.

How do you see the future of your artistic project?

Big, I hope. My first album will be finished soon.
