Supermassive is a duo from Montpellier making unashamed Electro-Rock. After winning people over with “The One” and “Reason”, the duo recently presented its new single “One Night Stand”. A collaboration with The Ware and singer Nina, in which they celebrate the carefree, free and modern woman. We met Supermassive. …
For those who don’t know you yet, can you introduce yourselves?
Edgar and Simon, we’re a French duo from Montpellier. We met at the same sound production school and since then, let’s say we really hit it off. We realised our two worlds matched really well, and that’s what made us want to create this project.
Why “Supermassive”?
Good question…
Your third single “One Night Stand” has just come out. Tell us about it.
It’s a slightly different track from the previous ones, in the sense that this time we wanted to celebrate the liberated woman, who breaks the codes of modern society a bit. In the video, we wanted to feature four girls who don’t really care what other people think, in the spirit of the “Queens of the Road”. Their behaviour directly echoes the lyrics of the song: a woman who owns her fleeting desires (“One Night Stand”), with no strings attached, one night where anything becomes possible and where men and women are equals.

How did this first collaboration with the duo The Ware go?
It all happened really fast, imagine four brains on one computer! There was a great vibe throughout the writing and the production. Nina, the singer, really has a distinctive voice, which gave the track a lot of charm and, at the same time, that punchy side. As for Eddy and Gaël from The Ware, they’re golden guys and really good listeners, which made the collaboration really smooth.
Where do the Electro-Rock influences that define your music come from?
We’re very attached to these blends of styles, in the sense that we ourselves, as mates and as a band, are different in our approach to sound. Edgar is very focused on acoustics and musical design, and Simon more on the synthesis and technology side. Mixing the two means we can easily juggle different sound characters, but also different emotions.

You pay particular attention to your image as artists, don’t you?
Yes, that’s true. It’s important for us to reflect that cool side, which is who we are. Communication and image remain something important for our profile as artists, you can’t neglect it.
In fact, every one of your tracks always comes with a meticulously crafted video?
When it comes to videos, we’re seriously demanding, especially Edgar, who has the soul of a real art director on that front. Above all, it’s a real pleasure to be able to bring a musical project to life in a music video. Especially when you’ve been imagining it for months and you want it to be perfect. We’re quite the perfectionists, and even in everyday life we have this urge to leave nothing to chance. We want to have control over everything we create, but that can sometimes be a double-edged sword.

How do you go about making your videos?
Actually, alongside the music we work for video production companies, we make music for adverts. And since they’re good friends, we work things out together: we do their music and they do our videos. That was the case for “Reason”, for example. We do tend to tear our hair out quite often, because we’d like to do Hollywood in Montpellier, but that isn’t always possible. So we find tricks, and we absolutely love it.
What’s the craziest scene you’ve had to shoot so far?
The most surreal scene was probably during the shoot for “Reason”, our second track. We’d set up a fake concert with 300 people inside a venue, all extras for the shoot. On top of that, add 300 or 400 litres of free beer, an insane atmosphere and a hype man worthy of the biggest electronic festivals. It was truly magical, it took us a few days to recover from that scene. True Story, guys.

What’s your relationship with EFIX?
Basically, it all started with him. We had a joint project with EFIX, which we called EFIX&EDGAR, very much into melodic techno and world music influences. After a while, we wanted to set up a second project, “Supermassive”, which was the side project of EFIX&EDGAR, but this time with influences leaning more towards rock, pop and electronic music. Then, little by little, the side project became the main project. Today EFIX carries on solo, but we still work together on some projects.
You seem very attached to the city of Montpellier. Does the city influence your music?
Absolutely, yes! This city is a gem when it comes to meeting people, exchanging, sharing knowledge, or just human experience. Montpellier is a very beautiful city to begin with, where life is good, and the sunshine surely has a lot to do with it too.
What’s next for you?
We’re not going to reveal everything right away! But right now we’re going all out on our next releases. We’re also preparing our next video, which is taking up a considerable amount of time. And alongside that, we’re putting our live show together. So the next chapter is coming soon. Bye guys, cheers.
