Samuel Marchais lays down eight tracks the way you remember a scent: in layers, without strain. With Core Memories, the Clermont-Ferrand producer, aka Solone, releases a new EP on the PentagonMGMT label. A project that distils several years of work between the studio and the stage, and sharpens a musical identity that already stands out in the new wave of French electronica.
That identity reveals itself from the very first listens. A sound engineer and multi-instrumentalist, Solone unfolds a porous electronica, shot through with hazy trip-hop, tender breakbeat and haunting melodies. The tracks I Love You So, What Have You Done, Good Old Days and I Will Always Be There wear their themes openly: attachment, erosion, what stands the test of time. An artistic direction fed by references he fully owns: Vegyn, Bonobo, Daphni and Now Always Fades.
And if the EP works just as well on headphones as it does live, it’s because the project has already been road-tested on stage: Bars en Trans 2023, Printemps de Bourges 2024, then support slots on Mezerg’s 2025 tour. Alongside all this, Solone co-runs Contrpoint, a Clermont-Ferrand collective that puts on AV nights and DJ sets in unusual venues.
All solid foundations on which Core Memories now rests, available since 24 April on all platforms.
