#Interview Rodmusic x QQUN

QQUN (pronounced “Quelqu’un”, French for “someone”) is a mysterious French producer and singer who grew up in a family of musicians. Fascinated by electronic music and urban pop, he chose to make this art his means of expression. After releasing a first EP in 2018 featuring the hits “Je comprends pas” and…

What made you want to create QQUN?

Above all, the desire to be able to express myself, to say what I feel and to get messages across, often implicitly. I really see art, and music in particular, as a means of expression.

Why did you choose that artist name?

To keep an anonymous side, but also to let people identify more easily with the messages and emotions I try to convey in my songs. The name also makes me laugh a lot, because it’s really awkward for a radio host to announce “Someone”, or when meeting people, for example.

Why keep so much mystery around your real identity?

I don’t know if I keep that mystery so well, but I’m not looking for fame. I don’t want this project to ever affect my private life through media exposure, which is something a lot of artists sometimes come to regret.

You come from a family of musicians?

Yes, exactly! My parents met when they were both music theory teachers at a music school. My father later changed paths, but my mother still teaches in a music school and at a secondary school.

QQUN: J’aime

This project is enjoying a success you didn’t expect. How do you explain it?

Yes, it’s amazing! At first it was a side project, really just for fun, then it very quickly became my priority after the success of the first tracks.

Several radio stations have put their trust in you by playing your tracks regularly. I suppose that’s hugely satisfying for you?

It’s a huge pleasure and I could never thank them enough for it. If QQUN is where it is today, it’s above all thanks to all those radio stations playing my tracks.

QQUN: Je Comprends Pas (music video)

How would you describe the musical world you’re shaping?

It’s a mix of all my influences, from electro to hip-hop by way of French pop, but also of my different emotions like melancholy, joy, happiness. It stays very versatile: there’s no predefined world and no barriers that could limit my creativity.

What inspires you most when writing and composing?

Like a lot of artists, I’d say life experiences, everyday life, girls… a lot of girls, actually. Inspiration comes depending on my state of mind, my mood at the time and how I feel the music. If I’ve just been dumped, I’m not going to make a track that gets people dancing or smiling. I don’t cheat with my emotions.

Your latest track “Noir” is taken from your upcoming album and is currently doing nicely. How did it come about?

I’m glad you asked me that. It’s a track I wrote one evening, late at night, because of (or thanks to) a fit of the blues. I couldn’t sleep, something wasn’t right, but I couldn’t explain what. And at times like that, I can’t sleep until I’ve let that unease out. So I went to the studio and everything came very naturally, on an instrumental by “Mr Tout Le Monde” that I had on my computer.

Who is this Mr Tout Le Monde you work with?

He’s a techno and deep house DJ and producer who works a lot with melancholy. His tracks are also very melodic, and that’s what made me want to collaborate with him.

Tell us more about your next album?

We’re still working on it quite a bit. I wouldn’t say it’s finished, but we’re getting close. This album will be very eclectic, with melancholy, electro, more tribal influences, but urban ones too… There’ll be something for everyone, as they say.

You’re one of the lucky few to have opened for Maître Gims. How did your performance go?

It was an honour to have had that chance and that opportunity to play on incredible stages like the Halle Tony Garnier in Lyon or the Zénith in Strasbourg, in front of tens of thousands of people. It was an incredible experience.

What future would you like for this project?

I have absolutely no idea, we’ll see where the wind takes me. I’m going to keep enjoying myself and try to make good music, that’s what matters.
