After several months of teasing, the album is now out. Four years after Flashback FM, the Franco-Canadian duo continues a collaboration that is now anything but a side note. What first looked like a successful meeting has turned into a recognisable, almost self-standing artistic entity.
Since Paranoia, the first single unveiled last spring, the duo had been patiently sketching the outlines of this new chapter. Across ten tracks, California Calling explores a dreamed-up California, between golden light, 80s nostalgia and sunny electronic pop. The singles we already knew, such as Burnin’ or Do You Know Me, slot naturally into the whole, while Don’t Forget Yourself and Way I Move enrich this retro-modern fresco.
The duo isn’t trying to reinvent its formula. It is refining it. The textures are more controlled, the writing tighter, the identity sharper. California Calling confirms that Møme and Ricky Ducati now move forward as a project in its own right.
