We had been waiting for it with great impatience: the release of Kungs’ debut album “Layers”. In just a few months, Kungs has shot up to the status of a global artist.
Only two or three years ago, Valentin Brunel landed on SoundCloud, the gateway for so many musicians, where he uploaded the handful of tracks he had composed at the time in his home studio. Back then, the deep house scene was booming: he got reposted by lots of YouTube channels, where he quickly racked up several million plays. A well-known model in recent years, and one that also helped a certain Kygo and Lost Frequencies break through to the general public.
His prestigious remixes allowed him to make a real name for himself on the scene, until the day he put out his first solo single, “This Girl”, at the start of 2016. And you definitely know the rest: a massive hit that took him to international success at just 19.
Fun fact: the name “Kungs” comes from Google Translate. It means “Mister” in Latvian.
Today, Kungs releases “Layers”, his debut album, composed largely over the summer, in which he tells us a real story. Twelve tracks in which you’ll discover a range of moods and an explosion of sounds very true to his influences. Some tracks, like “Bangalore Streets”, stray a little from his usual style, but who cares: Kungs had fun composing this album, and that’s what matters most.
Used to singles, he faces a real challenge in taking on this completely different format, but we have very few worries about the success awaiting this album in the coming months.
