Unveiled at IFA 2025, the Technics SL-40CBT marks a turning point for the Japanese brand: a turntable designed as much for listening pleasure as for ease of use. Goodbye to the strict codes of the SL-1200: here you get a clean two-block design, lighter, a raised platter without strobe-dotted edges, and controls gathered around the Start/Stop button. It speaks to the living room as much as to the studio.
The real novelty? Built-in Bluetooth. The SL-40CBT can send your records to a wireless speaker or headphones in the blink of an eye. Enough to set the turntable up wherever you live (a shelf, the TV unit, the bedroom) without running cables across the room. The Terracotta, Light Grey and Charcoal Black finishes echo the brand’s connected speakers: the whole thing feels consistent.
That said, Technics isn’t turning its back on its heritage. You still get direct drive and its die-cast aluminium platter, guarantees of stability, as well as an S-shaped tonearm with counterweight and anti-skating (only VTA height adjustment is missing, which makes sense for a mainstream audience). In terms of set-up, it’s plug & play: a pre-mounted Audio-Technica AT-VM95C cartridge, a switchable phono preamp and adjustable anti-vibration feet. Fresh out of the box, this turntable already looks set for a bright future.
Our verdict: Technics throws the door wide open to new vinyl fans, without sacrificing technical credibility. An elegant way into the Technics universe, to play your records in style… and wire-free.
